Ken was raised and educated in Cape Town and was based in the Karoo for some 24 years before moving to George.

He worked in the old Cape Department of Nature Conservation for 25 years, mostly as a Reserve Manager and later as a Manager of reserve managers. In these years he was involved in game capture, game guard training, veld rehabilitation, vegetation management, wildlife research and rare species management among other things.

In 1996, Ken started Conservation Management Services which focuses on veld management, wildlife management and management planning for game reserves and commercial game ranches.

Ken has published three books on habitat and wildlife management and managing game guards (field rangers) and has contributed chapters to a number of other well known books on veld and wildlife management.

He is an Honorary Senior Member of the Game Rangers Association of Africa.

Ken Coetzee - Chairman - Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve
In addition to South Africa, he has nature conservation work experience in Botswana, Namibia, Nigeria, Morocco, Senegal, Malawi and Kenya which provided a good foundation for his part time lecturing at the Nelson Mandela University campus in George, in the nature conservation and game ranch management courses.

Ken is a practical field ecologist who is passionate about veld rehabilitation and the restoration of damaged rangelands in Africa. He is passionate about the Karoo and has a good working knowledge about its different landscapes, plants, wildlife and people.

He firmly believes that the answers to the environmental problems in Africa today (poaching, soil erosion, alien plant invasions etc.) lie in the mobilisation of rural communities to restore, sustainably utilise and protect the natural resources that they live with for their own benefit. This philosophy is a primary guide for his work as a consultant.
