Louis obtained a B.A. LL.B. from the University of Stellenbosch and worked in various legal capacities and in various towns for the Department of Justice for some ten years ending as a Senior State Advocate: Attorney General.

In 1994 he turned to sheep farming in Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo and since 1999 he has also been running an eco-tourism operation and nature school, Minwater Eco Adventures which offers activities ranging from interpretative nature tours, environmental education, and training and environmental services such as advising landowners on veld management.

All activities are strictly regulated to keep the negative impact on the natural environment at a minimum. All visitors and clients are sensitised to the natural environment and Louis spends much time and effort on environmental education with people from all age groups and from all walks of life, focusing on awareness of biodiversity, biodiversity conservation and the need for a healthy natural environment.

Louis believes that awareness of biodiversity in our country is key and that all possible role players should be involved in a campaign to lessen human impact on our natural environment.

Louis has a comprehensive knowledge of the fauna and flora of the Klein Karoo and other parts of South Africa and he spends many hours in the veld observing and studying wildlife, enhancing his knowledge and experience.

Louis was appointed as a Director of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve in July 2020.
