Arthur Brigg

Artist Biography
Arthur was born in 1972 in Bloemfontein, raised in Swellendam and when he was 7 years old moved to Cape Town with his mother and sister where he lived until recently. He moved to Struisbaai in 2021 and now lives on a smallholding with his wife and daughter in Barrydale. Arthur finds inspiration in open roads through vast landscapes, beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see, and anywhere else adventure lures him to. Although he had formal training as a graphic designer and had completed thousands of illustrations (ink, gauche, water colour, copic marker mediums) he has no formal fine art training. Arthur works mainly in Acrylic on canvas, capturing the beauty of local seascapes and landscapes. He can switch from loose to meticulous depending on his mood at the time. Although he enjoys working in ink, pencil and charcoal as well, he has concentrated on painting as his primary medium.

SKU: ART22AB02
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Size: 76cm w X 38cm H
About Artwork
“Ever been so hot that it felt like the air was sucking the spit right out of your throat? Before we bought our small holding in Barrydale we visited friends there during summer. This particular weekend was stifling hot, and I couldn’t resist capturing how I felt on canvas. Walking around the desert of the Karoo, one can’t help but wonder how humans could survive in such a hostile environment and as desolate as it may seem, however, it is teaming with life! The milliard insects, birds, reptiles and plants deserve accolades for finding a way to call the Karoo their home.” – Arthur Brigg

Tranquility Arriving

Price: R11 600
SKU: ART22AB03
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Size: 101cm x 51cm
About Artwork
“This large panoramic painting was finished after a misty morning walk on the beach with my dog. As the sun rose behind the clouds I could see a milliard colours – all subtle – where I suspect others only saw grey. Those fleeting moments of crystalline light glimmering from behind the waves almost brought me to my knees with awe. We were blessed to spend half the lock downs during Covid near to Struisbaai beach – with renewed appreciation for nature and the vast expanse of sand and sea.” – Arthur Brigg

Carolina Overbeek

About the Artwork

What is Encaustic

The word encaustic comes from the Greek word Enkaustikos meaning to heat or burn in.

Encaustic medium consist of natural refined beeswax and damar resin, which assist in the curing process.

Encaustic Care

As with all artforms, the artwork must not be exposed to extreme temperatures, and do not leave in a sealed vehicle.

After completion of an encaustic painting, there is a curing process of a few months, which might form a slight haze calles “bloom”.

If the artwork looks dull or cloudy it can be buffed gently with a microfibre cloth.

“My botanical range is a representation of the power of disconnecting from technology and embracing yourself within the serenity and undisturbed beauty of nature.Through respect and appreciation for our environment and all living forces, we create a beautiful harmony between nature and people and so develop and discover a deep longing for peace. Creating art is another way to connect and to express nature in a different context; a lifelong memory is created. I believe that, amidst the hustle and bustle of modern living, we are longing for peaceful and mindful experiences. Take off your shoes and go for a walk in nature, stop, look up through the branches of a tree, find the stars and the moon…There is so much more; bigger forces that govern an unspoken rhythm all around us.” – Carolina Overbeek

Artist Biography

Carolina was born and raised in the Free State where her passion for the creative arts was cultivated. Carolina graduated in 2009 from Tshwane University of Technology with a B-Tech degree in Interior Design. Living in the hustle and bustle of Pretoria and Johannesburg she went on to follow a career in the designing industry. She now lives in the Southern Cape on a farm near Still Bay, surrounded by nature. She has developed from drawing detailed pencil sketches and bright acrylic paintings. For the past few years encaustic painting (beeswax & damar resin) has been an amazing adventure, exploring this ancient medium with a mixed media approach. It is by travelling, hiking and exploring that she takes in nature’s forms and shapes and incorporate them into her art.

Ferdo Voigt

Artist Biography
“A passionate full-time artist for around 20 years, I paint in oils, switching between fine brushwork and the palette knife, depending on the demands of each painting. I am mostly self-taught, constantly learning and upskilling through online tutorials, traditional art books and being inspired by other artists. Having travelled extensively, my inspiration comes from being at peace in nature, whether at the Egyptian pyramids, exploring the jungle in Belize or free-diving with living treasures in the ocean. For the last few years, my work has explored small-town urban and rural landscapes, the wide vistas of the Little Karoo as well as the inner landscapes of the human subconscious.

My other love is fishing, which I take every opportunity to pursue. Just a short walk from my studio, fishing in Gouritsmond allows me to quiet my busy creative mind and stretch my legs between long stints at the easel. My passion for ocean life has inspired a range of sculptures of the local fish, which have found their way onto the walls of many collectors.”

Ferdo is currently exhibiting his work at the Hessequa Art Gallery in Riversdale, Karoo Art Hotel and THE Gallery in Montagu.

2018: Placed 2nd in the Landscape Category at the SCAVA Annual Art Competition in George
2020: Shortlisted in the Top 16 of The South African ARTIST Magazine’s 2019/2020 Cover Competition (Still Life)
2021: Long-listed in the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery 2021 Portrait Award

Hannalie Taute

Artist's Statement
One of the themes in Hannalie’s work is the exploration of identity. Through the juxtaposition of embroidery thread stitched onto rubber inner tyre tubes and vintage photographs, she subverts conventions and existing narratives. Alter egos or conflicting identities are imposed onto the characters in the photographs who are given incongruous masks and transformed into hybrids. Through these provocative transfigured portraits, the artist questions ideas of socially assumed identities.

Hannalie’s combination of materials – car tyre rubber referencing a traditional realm of men and embroidery thread traditionally related to women’s work – challenges patriarchal stereotypes and adds a layer of tension to her arresting portraits.

Another area of exploration is the artist’s own paracosm – or imaginary world. Fairytale characters, creatures and monsters find their way into wedding and other portraits or become darkly humourous 3D embroidered rubber sculptures.

Artist Biography
Hannalie Taute was born in Fochville in Gauteng, South Africa. In 2000 she obtained a National Higher Diploma in Fine Art at PE Technicon (now the NNMU). Since then she has had 16 solo exhibitions, and has taken part in over 35 group exhibitions. Hannalie’s recent solo exhibition was hosted by MContemporary Gallery in Sydney, Australia in July 2022.

In 2004 Hannalie was a finalist in the ABSA l’Atelier exhibition and a nominee for the Fiesta awards in 2012, 2015 and 2017. She received the Kanna Award for best visual art production at the 2014 KKNK Arts Festival for her solo exhibition called Rubber ever after. In 2017 she represented South Africa at the Museum Rijswijk Textile Biennale in the Netherlands.

Her work is part of the academic collection of UNISA as well as various private collections. Hannalie currently resides and works in Riversdale in the Western Cape.

Jetske Fouché

About the Artwork

The artwork represents succulents as beautiful artforms in itself. They are both graphic and sculptural. Beautiful in colour and voluptuous in form. Versatile and drought-resistant whether found in the succulent-Karoo or grown in a container in a city-slicker’s pad.

Artist Statement
“I am both inspired and intrigued by Nature’s wonderful gifts: Be it textures, colours or the shadows casted by leaves. Shapes and lines, the markings on the back of a little lizard. Dappled shadows and sparkling droplets. The smallest little details are all interlocking pieces of a giant jigsaw-puzzle called Nature. These little details speak to me.

All my works are original and once-offs. I work either from real objects or from my own photographs (or photographs supplied in the case of commissions.)

I am an absolute perfectionist and create realistic artwork. I accentuate the contrasts between light and shadow. By concentrating on the shadows, the actual subject will come forward to be viewed. Hours of patience, the use of mark making, a fascination with detail and a passion for perfection and originality shaped my style. But I am still learning…”

Louise Kluyts

About the Artwork

“The environment and the destruction of our world by humanity is always a theme in my work. It is as if I try to find an instinctive solution for humanity on Earth

My work is always inspired by colour, texture, a nuance or a glimpse of soul. The process is instinctual. I ALWAYS honor my process…”

Industrial Revolution of Hope

This painting is about the loss of hope, the overwhelming evidence about what we are doing to the earth and our future.
Overgrazing, industrial pollution, the loss of natural spaces. Yet, the cows symbolize hope and fertility… The earth will  recover without us…
The cows are part of human evolution. It is through our connection to who we as a species are that we will find the answers for our hope.
We have to look ourselves in the eye.

Cosmic Revolution

This work is trying to explain the concept- through time… Everything we do has consequences… What we sow, we will reap… the laws of nature.
Nature finds a way in the darkness of winter. Deep in the soil there is growth.
Movement, education, communication…

The Corridors brings balance

This work is about finding the balance, bringing life/nature back into our environment… building corridors where we respect the whole and see ourselves as part of the cycle of life and not above it.

Artist Biography

Louise Kluyts is an artist who lives, works and facilitates art workshops in the quaint town of Heidelberg, Western Cape. Simple lines and brilliant, saturated colours are the basis of her naive floral and often abstract art.

Her uninhibited and intuitive approach to different mediums and composition give rise to highly individual works. Each painting is a bold expression but at the same time filled with symbology and meaning taking you on a journey of new insights.

Louise’s art is characterised by raw creativity and an innocent frankness, realised on canvas in an eclectic range of mediums. Louise jumps from medium to medium with childlike abandonment, she genuinely loves experimenting with different materials and displays a dare-to-try attitude towards creativity and art.

Louise has been a full time artist since 1999 and opened Star Nation Art Studio & Gallery when she stayed in Blouberg in 2000. Louise relocated the art studio to Heidelberg in 2002 where she developed her art workshops that have since evolved into online art courses.

Nakita Joubert

Artist Biography
“Thirty-five years ago I realized my calling as an artist. At that time I was doing very commercial art using Chalk pastels, Ink and Acrylics but it wasn’t satisfying my soul. I needed to express myself.
Deciding to paint my dreams and where my imagination took me while listening to music is where I found my love for fantasy and expressionism. Painting with all art mediums, I find oil is my favourite.
Over the years my art has been exhibited in numerous galleries and of my art pieces are abroad in Germany, England, Australia, New Zealand, Holland and many more countries. I also illustrated a children’s book, before moving to Albertinia. Almost all my art has a story that comes from my soul and the plight of Mother Nature and the Earth.”
