WHAT ON EARTH IS THAT?
Biosphere Reserves are areas of terrestrial and marine ecosystems that are internationally recognised as being of great natural and scientific value and if you are sitting on one of our purple benches you are in the largest one in South Africa
– the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR)!
The GCBR is a 3.2-million-hectare UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve located in the Western Cape of South Africa. The region encompasses an astonishing diversity of landscapes, from rugged mountains to pristine coastline. This remarkable region is home to a unique blend of fynbos, succulent Karoo, and Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany biodiversity hotspots, making it a treasure trove of plant and animal life. In fact, this region has over 5,000 plant species, 670 of which are found nowhere else in the world!
Purple benches
We are placing our purple benches in iconic places and beautiful spaces across the GCBR region; each location offering a unique perspective of the natural wonder that surrounds you. You might find yourself perched on a cliff overlooking the vast expanse of the ocean, nestled amidst a verdant fynbos landscape, or gazing upon the majesty of the Langeberg Mountains.
Upon encountering a purple bench, take a moment to pause and appreciate be beauty that surrounds you, the importance of this region and that nature that you are a part of.
