We will be clearing invasive alien hakeas west of where we cleared in June 2021. Again, we work from the Bergfontein farm with our host Adam van Nieuwenhuizen, and will camp next to the small farm house, which has ablution facilities and a braai place we can use. The farm road requires a vehicle with good clearance but 4 by 4 is not needed. Turnoff to Bergfontein farm: -33.991642°S, 21.553515°E. Location of the Bergfontein farmhouse -33.974598°S, 21.551373°E.
Friday 9 September, arrive before 17h00 to set up camp before dark.
Saturday 10 September 08h00, we begin walking to the hack locations, with two options available: (1) less than 1 km south west of the farm house on reasonable terrain; and (2) about 3 km north west of the farm house, starting on the path then going over rough/shrubby terrain. 12h30: lunch in the mountains, and for those who are tired, a leisurely walk back, while for those with energy, more hacking, followed by an evening bring-and-braai.
On Sunday 11 September there is the opportunity to walk the old Witblitz trail (begins at the farm house) to the neck overlooking the Klein Karoo, (with the possibility of more hacking on route), returning to the farm house before 14h00. For those wishing to walk further than the nek there is an option to do so with Ed and to stay an extra night, departing Monday morning.
Your own tents and camping and cooking equipment and food. For the hack, be sure to bring gloves and wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, your lunch and large water bottles. Bring a handsaw and loppers or secateurs if you have. Light-weight saws are available for those without.
