Through the incredible support from the Garden Route District Municipality’s Green Schools Programme, GCBR’s Environmental Education team rolled out 32 recycling bins, two compost bins and two worm farms to selected schools in the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve. This collaboration and helped bring valuable resources and support to the schools, while GCBR led engaging sessions to guide learners on how to use these bins effectively, promote environmental awareness and share practical ways to care for the environment.
This initiative was implemented during February and March 2026 with the following schools:
- Panorama Primary, 1054 learners, Grades R-7
- Molenrivier Primary, 80 learners, Grades 1-6
- Langenhoven High School, 241 learners, Grades 8-9
- Heidelberg High School, 297 learners, Grade 8-12
- Kairos Secondary, 82 learners, Grades 8-9
- Herbertsdale Primary, 93 learners, Grades 4-7
- Albertinia High School, 160 learners, Grades 8-9
- Goedgegun Primary School, 40 learners, Grade R-6
Learners were taught the importance of recycling, how to separate waste correctly, and how everyday actions contribute to cleaner, healthier communities. Each session included interactive discussions and question-and-answer segments to reinforce the key messages. Small prizes were awarded for correct responses, adding enthusiasm and encouraging participation.
This outreach initiative helped build responsibility among learners. By equipping schools with the knowledge and tools to recycle on their own, we enable young environmental ambassadors who can continue making a positive impact.
