Botlierskop Game Reserve Biodiversity Training

Jul 15, 2024 | General News

Our extension officer Jolandie and the interns were recently invited to do some training with the guides from Botlierskop Game Reserve. This was a wonderful opportunity to share knowledge on the biodiversity of the area and more specifically the plant species on the reserve.

The day was started with a presentation on the basics of fynbos and the region. The group then headed into the field and looked at specific species on the reserve. It was a wonder exploring the diversity and looking at medicinal values associated with the plants. The guides pointed out plants that they often see on game drives and wanted to know more about. This led the talk and allowed for a very informative session.

We looked at a variety of plants species from the Erica unicolor, which is classified as endangered due to habitat loss, to the Cape Bulrush (Typha capensis) found in their wetlands. Some of the most interesting species that were observed were the Brownies (Gladiolus mutabilis), plenty of False buchu (Agathosma ovata) and three different kinds of Helichrysum species.

The training has resulted in a document with 53 different plant species that were either discussed in depth during training or seen and then elaborated on later. We trust that this training had been beneficial and will result in further opportunities in the future.
