From 27 to 29 October, the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR) hosted a Brightstar Lifestyle training programme for the MAB Youth (Man and the Biosphere Programme) as well as several GCBR team members. The training was facilitated by GCBR Director, Dr Arnel Huisamen, who graciously provided the training pro bono to support capacity development in the GCBR.
The Brightstar Lifestyle programme aims to develop personal, relationship, and leadership skills that help individuals live their lives with excellence while becoming more effective leaders and team members. It focuses on building emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and practical tools for navigating life, work, and relationships.
During the three-day course, three key topics were covered that transform, connect, and positively impact people’s lives: Brilliant Self, Brilliant Relationships, and Brilliant Leaders.
What the Brightstar Lifestyle Training Is About
The Brightstar Lifestyle training helps individuals develop the personal, relationship, and leadership skills needed to live a more excellent and significant life. Through modules that explore life purpose, values, emotional management, and communication, participants gain the tools to become more effective leaders and role models. The programme is designed for individuals, businesses, schools, and community groups.

Day 1: Brilliant Self
The first day focused on Brilliant Self, exploring responsibility, values, self-worth, life purpose, and priorities. Participants engaged in self-reflection and group activities, guided by insightful facilitation from Arnel.

Day 2: Brilliant Relationships
Day two centred on Brilliant Relationships. Participants learned about managing emotions, the LEMON tool (a tool used to identify one’s leadership style), communication, conflict resolution, and staying true to oneself. This module addressed both personal and professional relationships, highlighting how emotional awareness and relational dynamics influence communication.
Day 3: Brilliant Leaders
On the third day, the focus shifted to Brilliant Leaders. Key topics included building teams, planning an event, empowering others, role-modelling, and inspiring those around us. This module emphasised how the three pillars (self, relationships, and leadership) work together to help individuals fulfil their life purpose.
Throughout the training, we participated in a variety of activities; some designed to help us get to know each other, others that pushed us out of our comfort zones. Team activities strengthened both our relationship-building and leadership skills.
