From 7 to 9 July, the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve collaborated with Magpie Art Collective from Barrydale to host a 3-day upcycling workshop aimed at inspiring creativity and environmental awareness among local youth.
Creativity Meets Recycling
A total of 36 learners of the Albertinia community participated in the workshop. Over the three days they worked with items like plastic bottles, bottle tops and yogurt containers, materials that would usually be thrown away. The goal was to show how waste can be transformed into something useful and beautiful.
Three Days of Making
The workshop was broken into three parts. On day one, learners focused on color, painting and decorating each item in bright shades. Day two was about design, as participants cut, curved and shaped the materials into individual flowers. On the final day, everything came together as the group assembled the pieces into a full floral display.
Results That Bloom and Building Future Stewards
The 3-day workshop showed what’s possible when young minds and a little imagination come together. What started as waste became art, and what started as an idea became 156 reasons to believe that small actions can lead to big change.
