On 28 July, our Environmental Awareness team, Marinda and Erin, led an outreach at Panorama Primary School, with the support of a MAB Youth Member. The day was dedicated to inspiring young minds to appreciate the environment through greening their school. Together, we engaged with 120 enthusiastic Grade R learners, introducing them to the joy of connecting with nature through practical, hands-on activities that encouraged curiosity and teamwork.

Preparing the Ground

The week leading up to the event was filled with preparation and planning. We spent time cleaning the area, removing old building materials, and loosening the compacted soil to make it easier for new plants to grow. To ensure healthy water flow, we dug a drainage channel and carefully prepared the holes for the flowers. This groundwork created a clean and organised space where the learners could safely participate, while also improving the long-term sustainability of the garden area.

Hands-on Planting with Learners

When the big day arrived, excitement filled the air as the young learners gathered around the planting area. Although we had prepared the holes in advance, the learners were eager to get their hands dirty and plant the flowers themselves. Many were so enthusiastic that they asked to plant more than one flower, proudly showing off their work to their classmates and teachers. After the planting was done, we spread wooden chips in the walking areas to protect the flower beds and to make it easier for learners to water the plants without damaging them. Seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter was a wonderful reminder of how simple activities can spark a lifelong love for nature.

Maintaining and Replanting

A few weeks after our initial planting, we noticed that some of the plants at the top of the slope had unfortunately not survived due to the steep gradient and inconsistent watering. Rather than letting this setback discourage us, we used it as an opportunity to teach the importance of ongoing care and problem solving. On 7 October, we returned to the school to implement adjustments to the problem site including replace 50 plants and add more indigenous vegetation. This experience reinforced the message that caring for the environment is an ongoing responsibility.

A Rewarding Experience

This project was not only about planting flowers, but it was also about planting the seeds of awareness and responsibility in the hearts of young learners. It required effort, teamwork, and patience, but the outcome was incredibly fulfilling. Watching the garden flourish and seeing how excited the children were to be part of it reminded us of the power of small actions. The Panorama Primary outreach demonstrated urban conservation within schools by creating beautiful green spaces, and fostered connection and appreciation within the. next generation.
