Plastic Free July – The GCBR Plastic Challenge

Aug 5, 2020 | General News

Inspired by our own Chief Executive

Inspired by our own Chief Executive, Dr Steve du Toit, the Marketing function of the GCBR launched its first Facebook ad campaign on 7 July 2020.

Steve spends much of his own time enjoying and communing with nature. However, whilst undertaking strolls on the beach or elsewhere he was disappointed to see hundreds of metres of micro-plastics in the Stilbaai Marine Protected Area. He is out there picking up plastic daily and making a difference. The GCBR welcomes your help in finding solutions to the micro-plastics damaging our Marine Protected Areas. Get in touch or get involved!

Plastic Free July

July also happened to be Plastic Free July and so with such a focus on plastic, we developed an awareness campaign to explain how plastic is affecting the earth, what the threats of plastic pollution are, tips on how to contribute to reverse this and how picking up one piece a day can make a difference.

We encouraged our website users and our social media followers to get involved by taking part in an online competition which entailed picking up virtual pieces of plastic from the GCBR website and submitting screen shots of these. We also actively encouraged everyone to pick up real pieces of plastic and to simply take a photo of each piece picked up and submit those too.

The second aspect of the campaign was designed to reach our social media followers and they were asked to actively interact. We received such an enthusiastic response with more than 150 000 views and we reached over 56 000 people.

Check out our video so you too can be stimulated and fight for the cause.

#GCBRPlasticChallenge Winners

On 4 August we were very excited to announce our Plastic Challenge winners.

Congratulations to Manie Mostert, our first prize winner, who qualified for a two-night stay for two at Avondrust Farm Stay in Klaarstroom. Manie’s interest and commitment to this challenge were incredible.

The GCBR gives special thanks to Michelle Klue at Avondrust who kindly sponsored this prize valued at R2,200. Located in the foothills of the mighty Swartberg mountains and on the banks of the Groot River, Avondrust farm is a beautiful working farm offering a memorable farm stay in breath-taking scenery.
