fransmanshoek conservancy

Fransmanshoek Conservancy is seeking out an enthusiastic Nature Conservation 3rd year student to complete their experiential training year with us during 2023.

This coastal conservancy has previously employed twenty-nine students over the last eighteen years who have acquired their Nature Conservation Diplomas, and most have gone on to do their B Tech/Advance Diplomas. The conservancy is 2000 ha in size, stretches over 16.4 km’s of coastline and is situated about half an hour west of Mossel Bay in the Garden Route. This post suits people who are keen on terrestrial and marine coastal conservation.

Minimum requirements. Please read the following carefully:

The Candidate should have obtained or be currently enrolled in a Nature Conservation Diploma (2nd year going into 3rd year WIL year) or equivalent natural sciences degree. This post is open to individuals who are eager and able to use their own initiative without always being under direct supervision. A lazy person will not be appropriate. A combination of physical, strategic and computer work makes up most days. Candidates should have a driver’s licence and own transport. The Candidate must be proficient in English, whereas the ability to also speak Afrikaans, relatively well, will be advantageous. Basic computing skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint) is a necessity. Good people skills are essential. The candidate should be physically fit and be willing to walk long stretches of coastline in all conditions. The area is rural and quiet; therefore, the candidate should be able to spend hours and sometimes days on their own

Fransmanshoek Conservancy’s roles are a combination of urban and rural nature conservation with the main focuses being on compliance management, environmental education and awareness, veld rehabilitation and alien vegetation management, maintenance of tourist facilities, vegetation surveys, project management, research and monitoring and general administration.

The successful candidate will be fully exposed to the management of the conservancy and stands to gain invaluable conservation and project management experience in both the

terrestrial and coastal/marine environment. The conservancy will be able to provide the student with all the necessary experience as required by the Nature Conservation Diploma’s experiential year. A monthly stipend and basic accommodation will be provided.

Please note: Interest in an outdoor activity such as fishing, surfing, diving, mountain biking, horse riding etc., are an added benefit as the area is far away from the usual activities a town would provide.
