A group of GCBR MAB Youth members (Faith, Patricia and Sinelethu) visited Grade 10 learners at Langenhoven High School to raise awareness about World Oceans Day, celebrated annually on the 8th of June.
The session focused on ocean conservation and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. Learners were introduced to a variety of fascinating marine species, including the rare Coelacanth, often called a “living fossil.” They learnt that this ancient fish is found in deep ocean waters and has existed for millions of years. The learners also explored the anatomy of female sharks and gained a better understanding of marine life and ocean biodiversity.
Leila, GCBR Youth Coordinator, led an informative discussion on the purpose of World Oceans Day, why it is celebrated globally, and why healthy oceans are important for both people and nature. The session encouraged learners to think about the role oceans play in regulating the climate, supporting food security, and sustaining biodiversity.
To make the learning experience more interactive and fun, Faith facilitated a fun Ocean Bingo activity. Patricia and Sinelethu assisted throughout the activity, helping learners follow the instructions and encouraging everyone to participate. The classroom was filled with excitement as learners engaged with the game and tested their knowledge of marine life.
The learners participated enthusiastically and left the session smiling, curious, and inspired. More importantly, they returned to their classrooms with a greater appreciation for the ocean and an understanding that even small actions can help protect marine ecosystems for future generations.
The day was a great success and served as a reminder of the importance of environmental education in inspiring the next generation of ocean guardians.
