On 18 March, GCBR team members Marinda, Purnille, and Erin, together with MAB Youth member Faith, visited Molenrivier Primary School to celebrate Global Recycling Day. The visit was filled with energy and purpose as they spent time with 80 learners, ranging from Grade R to Grade 6.
Learning with the Older Students
The day began with learners from Grades 4 to 6. The team spoke to them about the importance of recycling and revisited a previous lesson on recycling, by asking questions. It was surprising and encouraging to see how much the learners remembered. They confidently answered all the questions, showing that the lessons are being absorbed.
Upcycling Creativity in Action
After the discussion, the learners took part in a recycling competition. They presented items they had created using waste materials. The results were impressive, their projects were not only creative but also beautifully made. It was clear that the learners had put a lot of thought and effort into their work.
Fun with the Youngest Learners
The team then spent time with the Grade R learners. They introduced the idea of recycling in a simple and engaging way. The children then took part in a fun activity where they made their own baskets using plastic bottles. Instead of throwing the bottles away, they turned them into something useful, which they really enjoyed.
Hands-On Learning for Grades 1 to 3
With Grades 1 to 3, the focus was also on learning through doing. After a discussion about recycling, the learners created animal planters using 2-litre plastic bottles. They planted flowers inside their creations, combining recycling with kindling a connection to nature.
A Day to Remember
Overall, the day was filled with learning, creativity, and fun. It was inspiring to see learners of all ages getting involved, understanding the importance of recycling, and enjoying every moment of it. Experiences like this show how small actions can make a big difference in shaping young ambassadors for a greener future.
