Embracing Nature and Coaching at the ECPP 2024

I recently had the pleasure of attending the 11th European Conference on Positive Psychology (ECPP) in Innsbruck, Austria, representing the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR) as a director. Nestled in the heart of the Alps, this conference offered a unique blend of inspiring talks, interactive workshops, and a deep dive into the latest research and practices in positive psychology. The theme, “It’s you, it’s me, it’s us,” resonated throughout the event, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humanity and the collective pursuit of well-being.

Pre-Conference Workshop: Reconnect with Nature

My journey at the ECPP began with a pre-conference workshop on the morning of the first day, titled “Reconnect with Nature for Psychological Well-being,” led by Dr. Holli-Anne Passmore and Dr. Raina Chhajer. Held in the picturesque Hofgarten, this workshop provided a serene and immersive experience, perfect for setting the tone for the coming days.

Dr. Passmore and Dr. Chhajer introduced the concept of nature connectedness and discussed its profound impact on psychological well-being. Research indicates that engaging with the natural world can significantly reduce stress and enhance overall well-being. Through a series of guided activities, we explored ways to cultivate a deeper relationship with nature, learning practical techniques to integrate these experiences into our daily lives. The morning was filled with mindful walks, reflective exercises, and engaging discussions highlighting nature’s restorative power.

Afternoon Workshop: Positive Psychology Coaching

I attended Dr Daniela Blickhan’s “Positive Psychology Coaching” workshop in the afternoon. This session comprehensively explored how positive psychology principles can be effectively integrated into coaching practices to support clients’ flourishing.

Daniela’s approach emphasized the importance of understanding and leveraging character strengths in coaching. We delved into various positive psychology constructs, such as resilience, meaning, and mindfulness, and discussed their application in real-life coaching scenarios. The workshop was interactive, with role-playing exercises and group discussions, allowing us to practice new techniques and gain feedback in a supportive environment.

One of the key takeaways from this workshop was the emphasis on creating sustainable well-being. Daniela shared insights on how coaches can help clients build long-term resilience and maintain a positive outlook even in the face of challenges. The strategies and tools presented were not only insightful but also practical, providing a solid foundation for enhancing coaching practices.
