GCBR Smallholder Farmers Assistance

Dec 4, 2024 | Inspiration, Project News

The rising input costs, unstable economy and the rising fuel prices all contribute to the challenges faced by smallholder farmers. Despite producing most of the world’s food, smallholder farmers lack certain agricultural inputs that will improve their farming production. After conducting a needs analysis during the farmers day workshop that was hosted by the GCBR in September, GCBR Smallholder Farmer Extension Officer, Simthandile Ponti, discovered that most of the smallholder farmers lack agricultural inputs, and this barrier discourages them from farming.

Simthandile (GCBR), Somila Liwani (GCBR Project Assistant) and Purnille Albertyn (GCBR Intern), delivered animal feed, animal medicine, summer pasture seeds and organic fertilizer to the smallholder farmers as part of the GCBR smallholder farmer project. The assistance will contribute to the efficiency of their farming production and motivate the smallholder farmers to continue farming. The agricultural inputs that were donated will assist over 47 smallholder farmers from Riversdale, Heidelberg, Melkhoutfontein and Slangrivier.
