Nestled in the heart of the charming town of Barrydale, Yamù Botanicals is a stellar example of nature-inspired entrepreneurship. This small yet impactful business is dedicated to cultivating indigenous and rare herbs, and crafting organic medicinal products. Their offerings range from incense wands, essential oils, and fragrances to tinctures, herbal teas, and loose herbs, all lovingly created with a deep respect for nature.
In a recent collaboration, the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR) partnered with Yamù Botanicals on an exciting initiative to expand their product range. To celebrate this partnership, GCBR hosted their Q4 board meeting at Yamù, giving members a firsthand glimpse into this extraordinary nature-positive enterprise.
Rooted in the Earth
The name Yamù is derived from a Khoisan word meaning “of the earth,” encapsulating the essence of this business. Rather than imposing conventional farming practices on the land, Yamù focuses on sustainability and restoration. Through regenerative methods, they rehabilitate soil health, reintroduce indigenous plants and insects, and sustainably harvest their crops. This philosophy fosters a symbiotic relationship between people and the environment, exemplifying what it means to live in harmony with nature. As Yvette Anderson, the visionary behind Yamù Botanicals, explains, “Humans reach their full potential when plants reach theirs.”
Immersive Experiences in Nature
Plans are underway to offer guided tours of Yamù’s gardens, inviting visitors to reconnect with nature through sensory exploration. From the vibrant colours of the indigenous flora to the soothing scents of medicinal herbs, these tours will allow guests to see, taste, touch, and smell the beauty of the natural world. During the GCBR visit, board members and the management team had the privilege of previewing this experience.
The day began with an introduction to regenerative farming practices, enjoyed on Yamù’s stoep with stunning mountain views and a cup of their fragrant CommuniTEA in hand. This was followed by a guided walk through the gardens, where highlights included the “garbage garden,” an eco-friendly space adorned with art installations crafted from upcycled materials found on the property. The visit concluded with a fascinating tincture tasting session, where Yvette shared insights into the medicinal properties of these Yamù creations.
Looking Ahead
Yamù Botanicals exemplifies innovation, sustainability, and the harmonious integration of business with nature. GCBR is proud to support this inspiring initiative and eagerly anticipates its continued growth and positive impact.
