Did you know that if you are anywhere in the Hessequa municipal district that you are in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve? More specifically, you are in the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve (GCBR), a place of major biodiversity significance to the planet.
To celebrate our regions incredible natural wonders as well as our cultural heritage we are calling all teens (13-19 years old) living or going to school in Hessequa to show off your amazing talent and win big at the GCBR Inheems 2024 art competition!
There’s R20,000 in cash prizes up for grabs, plus your artwork could be featured on GCBR apparel for nature! This is your chance to celebrate the natural and culture wonders of our region, all while having a ton of fun and expressing yourself. Get creative and enter!
Here’s how:
- Create a painting or drawing inspired by our indigenous wonders
- Get an entry form from your local Hessequa Library or download it here: Entry Form
- Submit your artwork and entry form at your local Hessequa library by 2 August 2024
All artwork submission will be judged by an independent panel of experts in the following categories:
- The Artist – Technical skill mastery
- The Rising Star – Raw talent and potential
- The Creative – Creativity explosion
- The Botanical Illustrator – Accurate depiction of plants
- The Storyteller – Storytelling through art
- The Expressionist – Pure emotional expression
Prizes for each category:
1st Place: R1,000
2nd Place: R700
3rd Place: R500
There will also be 6 x Merit Awards that come with a R300 cash prize.
There will be only one teen artists who wins the title of “The Designer”, who will get a whopping R5,000 and have their artwork included in GCBR apparel range!
All artworks that reflect the Inheems theme and celebrate our natural and cultural heritage will be exhibited at a 2-day Art Exhibition at the Riversdale Civic Center on 23 and 24 August 2024.
