What is the MAB Youth Forum?

The MAB Youth Forum is an initiative by UNESCO that aims to empower young men and women, enabling them to get involved in decision-making processes and undertake actions that promote peace and sustainable development locally and globally. The forum is for young individuals aged between 14 and 35 who reside or work within a biosphere reserve and want to participate in voluntary activities and network with people.

Opportunities within the MAB Youth Forum

Membership in the MAB Youth Forum offers a platform to participate in events and campaigns that promote human-environment interactions. These include environmental education activities such as beach clean-up events and environmental educational projects that serve to protect and preserve natural habitats and raise awareness about environmental conservation.

Past and future activities

Some activities that involved the youth in the past year included the following:

  • An upcycling art workshop with Magpie
  • A woodwork workshop in collaboration with the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve
  • An introduction to digital marketing
  • Up-and-coming skills development workshops, including a two-day workshop in Montagu to learn about indigenous plants’ traditional and medicinal uses
  • A workshop hosted by a game ranger, including a game drive
  • A workshop on marine conservation and upcycling
