Planting a Vision

What started as a garden project soon revealed a much deeper need at Goedgegun Primary School. When we first visited the school in February 2025, they had already been without running water for months. GCBR stepped in to assist, restoring water to the bathrooms and garden taps. With the help of generous community donations, the buildings were painted, classrooms improved, and essential supplies provided. Once these basic needs were met we could then focus on our initial mission: building a sustainable garden that nourishes, educates, and empowers.

A Launch Filled with Ubuntu

As planting day approached, the school community surprised everyone. Learners and teachers has already prepared the soil, removing weeds, and digging holes with excitement. On launch day, community members joined in too, working side by side with the GCBR and Grootvadersbosch Conservancy teams. It became a day defined by unity, generosity, and shared purpose.

Watching Growth Take Root

In the weeks that followed, the gardens took off beautifully. Every return visit showed stronger herbs and vegetables to succulents and young trees. Learners proudly showed off their beds, proving how deeply they had taken ownership of the project.

Challenges in the Garden

Like any other garden project, the garden faced obstacles. Damage to the brassicas revealed an issue with aphids and slugs. After a careful assessment, natural solutions such as neem spray, organic insecticide, and companion plants were recommended to support recovery.

Taking Action & Continuing Care

Follow-up visits focused on treating the affected plants and helping the learners understand organic pest control. Despite the challenges, the garden stayed resilient and the learners’ commitment never faded.

Growing More Than a Garden

This “Seeds of Change” project has become a space for learning, teamwork, and nourishment. It has introduced sustainable practices and planted the foundation for long-term food support for the school. More importantly, it has sparked pride and hope among the children.

Looking Ahead

The next steps include ongoing monitoring, seed saving, organic pest management, and harvest and planting planning. As the garden grows, so do the learners, more confident, engaged, and inspired.

“Seeds of Change” is a movement rooted in purpose, unity, and hope.
